NFC tags

Has anyone heard of NFC tags? My son got a new phone that was NFC enabled and he bought these little discs that he can use to automatically make his phone do different things, like open an app, connect to a Bluetooth device, basically anything you program the tag to do. I didn't even know what this technology, but it is so cool.

I have read very little about NFC (near field communication) Tags. From what I know, they can only transmit small amount of data between 2 tags.. not sure if this gone advance recently. However, I am sure this is definitely make some difference in the way we use our mobiles today.
